The Small Risks With Laser Eye SurgerySo many people are getting their eyesight problems treated with laser eye surgery these days that it has become the established treatment for many vision problems. Laser surgery often eliminates the need to wear glasses or contacts, or lets you wear a lesser prescription with lighter lenses. This surgery, though very safe, does have risks and some instances of complications. Most people are good candidates for laser eye surgery, but there are those who are not and should know this in advance. Though rare, laser eye surgery risks should be considered. As with any surgery or medical treatment, find a surgeon who comes highly recommended with a good reputation so you can feel confident of the results. Answer all his questions completely and honestly so he can give you good advice and treatment. If you know people who have had lasik eye surgery, ask who they used and if they were happy. Be sure and ask your surgeon about chances of complications or side effects and the risks and benefits. Ask about cost of lasik and insurance coverage in advance. Getting all the lasik information in advance helps you and your laser vision doctor choose the best corrective treatment procedure for you. A very small percentage of patients will have problems with lasik eye surgery for vision correction. These problems fall into 10 categories: Decrease in best corrected vision: Your eye sight is improved, but isn't as good with glasses as before. Regression: the benefit of the surgery gradually decreases. Infection and delayed healing: Chances of infection are less than one in a thousand. Under or over correction: It is hard to gauge how the eye will react to lasik surgery in every case. Excessive corneal haze: this may happen during healing process and gradually goes away, but further surgery can correct it. Problems with a good procedure: You can't have perfect far and near vision with a lasik procedure. Sometimes expectations are unrealistic. Flap damage or loss: A tiny flap on the central cornea can become detached. Halo effect: at low light levels a faint shadow image of what you are seeing may occur in area of eye not operated on. Distorted flap: irregular healing of tissue flap on central cornea. Severe dry eye syndrome: After lasik surgery you may have dry eyes and need eye drops or additional surgery to get tear ducts working again. These problems are very rare and should not prevent you from having lasik eye surgery if you need it.
